Axia Begins Negotiations with Government of Newfoundland and Labrador to Deliver its Broadband Network

CALGARY, Aug. 7 /CNW/ - Axia NetMedia Corporation ("Axia") today
announced that it will begin negotiations with the Provincial Government of
Newfoundland and Labrador (the "Provincial Government") and EastLink
Communications ("EastLink") to build and manage distinct aspects of its
Government Broadband Initiative ("GBI"). Negotiations will be conducted over
the coming months and construction is anticipated to begin in April 2010.
Art Price, Chairman and CEO commented, "We are impressed with the
foresight and vision of the Provincial Government in recognizing the
importance of broadband as critical infrastructure. As much as railways and
roads were critical in the previous century, broadband is widely recognized as
the foundation for high-performing economies in this century. Once this
project is completed, the Province of Newfoundland and Labrador will have a
foundation for future economic development and establish the Province as a
leader in the global Knowledge Economy."
When completed, the GBI will connect more than 1,000 government
facilities that include healthcare institutions, libraries, schools, and other
offices in communities spanning all regions of the province. It will also
enhance the ability of Retail Service Providers to offer similar services to
local residential and business customers.
Murray Sigler, President Axia Canada added, "Building on our success in
Alberta, France and Singapore, we are pleased to have been selected to
negotiate with the Provincial Government and EastLink. As we move through the
negotiation process, we believe that Axia's unique Open Access Next Generation
model will demonstrate Axia's ability to add value to the Provincial
Government and meet Newfoundland and Labrador policy goals."

Axia provides Real Broadband(TM) IP services and solutions through
planning, designing and operating no conflict Open Access Next Generation
Networks. Axia has networks in Alberta, France and Singapore. Axia trades on
the Toronto Stock Exchange under the symbol "AXX".
