Awareness Unlimited Productions presents the premiere of EVOLUTION ... of the human kind

    A spectacular multi-media dance drama
conceived and directed by Armineh Keshishian

TORONTO, April 25 /CNW/ - Awareness Unlimited Productions is pleased to
present a spectacular dance drama that combines modern, jazz, belly dance,
interpretive and storytelling: EVOLUTION... of the human kind. Over 20 artists
perform in this unique multi-disciplinary event conceived and directed by
Awareness Unlimited Productions Artistic Director Armineh Keshishian.
Highlighting beauty, culture, grace and the universal truth that the human
race is all one, this extraordinary show will be premiered for two nights
only: May 11 and 12 at 8:30pm at Toronto's beautiful and magical Winter Garden
EVOLUTION... of the human kind lifts the veil off ancestral traditions as
it travels through the ancient times of the Pharaohs to the present day;
exploring relationships between men and women, the power of self and the
impact of societal norms on humanity throughout history. Breaking down
barriers of ethnicity, culture and religion, this celebration of life takes
its audience on a journey from an imprisoned self to one of empowerment.
Keshishian explores women's roles throughout history and "uncovers women
behind the veil" as the central figure transitions from a "woman of power" to
a "woman" to an "empowered woman" as the story travels through time.
Choreographed by Keshishian, traditional dances are expanded and enhanced
to suit a large-scale production. EVOLUTION... of the human kind is a feast
for the senses featuring gorgeously detailed costumes designed by Keshishian,
along with theatrical lighting by Nigel Romeril, and a beautiful selection of
music by various artists.
Keshishian's dancers are from diverse cultural backgrounds, as
multi-cultural as Toronto itself. Half the troupe is of Middle Eastern
descent. Keshishian notes, "These dancers see their art both as an expression
of their culture and of their soul. They are aware of the social taboos
against women performing this dance form in public in the Middle East. And
that is why they are putting so much passion and trust and belief in this
show. They want to be recognized for their art; and not just seen as bodies to
be hidden behind a veil." The other half of the cast has its roots in
countries as diverse as the islands of the Caribbean, China, Greece, Scotland,
Ukraine and Poland and England.
Artistic Director Armineh Keshishian is a Toronto-based Armenian
Canadian, born in Iran. Being raised in a Muslim country, albeit born into a
Christian family, has given her the opportunity to observe and study Middle
Eastern culture in depth. Her passion for belly dance drove her to rise above
the taboos in the Middle East. Later on in life, she embraced the dance in
totality as a way to align body, mind and spirit. Keshishian has studied with
different teachers from around the world. In Canada, she first trained with
Toronto's oldest belly dance school, Freddy's Dance Academy, run by Arabs. She
learned from other Arab teachers as well, including Egypt's legendary Mahmoud
Reda. She also trained with Mesmera, an American known for her dances with
7-10 feet boa snakes in Los Angeles. She has also studied modern dance and
jazz dance. Keshishian established Awareness Unlimited Productions to
celebrate all aspects of life and to show and recognize that there are always
choices. Awareness Unlimited Productions seeks to enrich the senses through
the art of dance, music and storytelling. EVOLUTION... of the human kind is
the company's debut production.
