Avaaz Statement on 'G8-Gate' Federal Court Ruling

TORONTO, April 28 /CNW/ - Today, the Federal Court ruled that it will not hold an emergency hearing on Avaaz's appeal to compel the Auditor General to release the G8 spending report before the election.

Ricken Patel, Executive Director of Avaaz, responds to today's Federal Court ruling:

"There is a very good case that the Auditor General's decision to withhold the G8 spending report is compromising the right to information guaranteed for all Canadians under the Charter. The judge did not rule on that issue today, instead he decided not to hold an emergency hearing to compel to Auditor General to do the right thing and release this report.

Unless the Auditor General reconsiders her decision, Canadians will have to go to the polls and vote based on what they know. And what we know is that a draft Auditor General's report shows the Conservative government guilty of the largest financial malfeasance in recent history, and the only claim to the contrary is provided by a minister in that government. The court won't force the Auditor General to provide the fingerprints, but we already have the smoking gun."

Earlier this week Avaaz, Canada's largest online advocacy organization, sued the Auditor General for the immediate release of the report to protect Canadians' constitutional rights. A leaked version of the report alleges that the Harper Government illegally handed 50 million taxpayer dollars to a Conservative riding and covered it up as G8 summit spending.
