Attorney General Announces Ten Judicial Appointments



    TORONTO, Aug. 23 /CNW/ - Attorney General Michael Bryant today announced
the appointment of four provincial judges and five regional senior judges to
the Ontario Court of Justice, and one appointment to the Ontario Judicial
Council.
    "These individuals have a wide range of legal experience that will serve
them well in their new roles on the bench," said Bryant. "They represent the
high quality of judges on the Ontario Court of Justice."

    Ontario Court of Justice Judges:

    Madam Justice Louise Botham has practised criminal law since 1987. She
has been a member of the Provincial Court Rules Committee, Chair of the
Alliance for Sustainable Legal Aid and a longstanding member of the area
committee of Legal Aid Ontario in Toronto. Madam Justice Botham was president
of the Criminal Lawyers' Association since 2005. She has appeared on panels
and made presentations on a variety of topics at conferences of the Criminal
Lawyers' Association, the Law Society of Upper Canada and the Advocates'
Society. Chief Justice Annemarie Bonkalo has assigned Madam Justice Botham to
preside in Brampton, effective September 6, 2007.

    Madam Justice Catherine Ann Kehoe was called to the Bar in 1996 and has
been an Assistant Crown Attorney in Ottawa. She is bilingual and has conducted
criminal prosecutions, appeals and other matters in the Ontario Court of
Justice, the Superior Court of Justice and before the Ontario Review Board. In
1997, as Chair of the Partner Assault Support Team, she worked with the
police, judiciary and others in the justice system to create the Ottawa
Domestic Violence Court. Madam Justice Kehoe has mentored mature students at
the University of Ottawa Law School and has guest lectured at various schools
in Ottawa. She has participated in Habitat for Humanity in both Ottawa and El
Salvador. Chief Justice Annemarie Bonkalo has assigned Madam Justice Kehoe to
preside in Ottawa, effective September 6, 2007.

    Mr. Justice Robert Kelly was called to the Bar in 1994 and has served
most of his career as counsel at the Crown Law Office - Criminal with the
Ministry of the Attorney General in Toronto, prosecuting criminal trials and
appeals at every level of court. In 2001, he spent a year as defence counsel
with a major Toronto law firm. He has conducted several seminars and given
presentations on various criminal law topics before organizations such as the
Ontario Crown Attorneys' Association, the Ontario Police College and the
Toronto Police Service. Chief Justice Annemarie Bonkalo has assigned
Mr. Justice Kelly to preside in Brampton, effective September 6, 2007.

    Madam Justice Sharon Margaret Nicklas was called to the Bar in 1994 and
has been an Assistant Crown Attorney in Hamilton, Brantford and Waterloo
Region. In 2003, she was appointed Deputy Crown Attorney in Waterloo Region
and in March 2007, she became the acting Crown Attorney for the region. She
was involved in establishing a mental health court in Waterloo Region that has
served as a model for other locations. Madam Justice Nicklas has been a member
of Community Partners in Kitchener-Waterloo, an organization that serves as a
liaison between the psychiatric ward of Grand River Hospital and the
community. She has given a number of presentations about the development of a
mental health court in Waterloo Region. Chief Justice Annemarie Bonkalo has
assigned Madam Justice Nicklas to preside in Kitchener/Guelph, effective
September 6, 2007.

    Regional Senior Judges:

    Madam Justice Judith Beaman has been appointed as a Regional Senior Judge
for the East Region effective August 22, 2007. Madam Justice Beaman, who
currently presides in Ottawa, was first appointed to the Ontario Court of
Justice bench January 12, 1998.

    Madam Justice Kathryn Hawke has been appointed as a Regional Senior Judge
for the Central West Region effective August 31, 2007. Madam Justice Hawke,
who currently presides in Brampton, was first appointed to the Ontario Court
of Justice bench February 6, 1995.

    Mr. Justice Gregory Regis has been appointed as a Regional Senior Judge
for the Central East Region effective September 2, 2007. Mr. Justice Regis who
currently presides in Oshawa, was first appointed to the Ontario Court of
Justice bench January 4, 1999.

    Mr. Justice Bruce Thomas has been appointed as a Regional Senior Judge
for the West Region effective September 1, 2007. Mr. Justice Thomas, who
currently presides in Chatham, was first appointed to the Ontario Court of
Justice bench May 4, 1999.

    Mr. Justice Donald Fraser, who presides in Kenora, has been reappointed
as a Regional Senior Judge for the Northwest Region effective October 1, 2007.

    Regional Senior Judges of the Ontario Court of Justice exercise the
powers and perform the duties of the Chief Justice in their regions. Their
duties include supervising and directing the sittings of the court and the
assignment of judicial duties in their regions.

    Ontario Judicial Council:

    Mr. Justice Robert Bigelow, the Regional Senior Judge for the Toronto
Region, has been appointed as the Regional Senior Judge member on the Ontario
Judicial Council, effective September 1, 2007.

    The Ontario Judicial Council, which is composed of judges, lawyers and
representatives of the public, investigates complaints made against
provincially appointed judges.

    Attorney General Bryant has appointed 69 judges since the McGuinty
government was sworn in on October 23, 2003.
