TORONTO, May 26, 2011 /CNW/ - With its biggest audience this season, AMERICAN IDOL came out on top as Wednesday's most-watched program, with 3.4 million viewers watching the two-hour season finale at 8 p.m. on CTV. Earlier in the day, OPRAH had its final curtain call with 1.6 million viewers, the highest audience on record for the series. Impressively, the OPRAH finale was #2 non-sports program of the day, following AMERCIAN IDOL, delivering more viewers than any program on Global or Cityttv Wednesday.

Up 17% compared to last year's finale of 2.9 million, AMERICAN IDOL was also #1 Wednesday with the key demos of A18-49 (1.4 million) and A25-54 (1.4 million). After a world-record 122 million votes, and cameos from some of music's hottest stars, more than eight million Canadians watched some part or all of the finale on CTV. The finale also grew in every half hour, peaking at 4.8 million viewers at 10:02 p.m., just before 17-year-old country crooner Scotty McCreery from North Carolina was named America's newest idol. AMERICAN IDOL audiences increased for the second year in a row on CTV. The series ends Season 10 with performance shows on CTV averaging 2.83 million viewers, making it the second most-watched season in series history in Canada.*

OPRAH's farewell episode also brought in blockbuster audiences as the most-watched episode on record. As the series ended its 25-year-run at 4 p.m. on CTV, 1.6 million viewers watched the Queen of daytime, and inspiration to people around the world, say goodbye. The finale episode was watched by nearly two-and-a-half times its average audience this season. Building up to the final show, 1.33 million watched Monday's episode "Surprise Farewell, Part 1," with Tuesday's episode capturing 1.53 million viewers, the second highest audience on record for the show. As the world said goodbye, Oprah told viewers, "I won't say goodbye. I'll just say, until we meet again."
