ARISE Technologies Corporation Announces Completion of PV Silicon Feedstock Program Milestone

WATERLOO, ON, Aug. 27 /CNW/ - ARISE Technologies Corporation (TSX-V: APV)
(ADAX: A3T) announced today that it has completed the first major milestone of
its PV Silicon Feedstock Program with the commissioning of its Silicon
Refining Furnace version 3.1 (SiRF(TM) 3.1). This process uses a proprietary
method to produce high purity silicon for photovoltaic (PV) applications using
a simplified chemical vapor deposition (CVD) process. Over the last 14 months
the Company has produced numerous test runs of silicon, and has confirmed
through independent test labs that it has achieved sub-ppm (parts per million)
levels of boron, phosphorus and metal impurities - a key factor for successful
silicon production.
The Company currently expects that its silicon production costs will be
similar to recent 'direct metallurgical routes' announced by several industry
participants, but that its unique simplified CVD process will produce higher
quality silicon with less technical risk. This silicon is expected to allow
ARISE to produce higher efficiency PV cells valued by customers, which will
differentiate the Company from other PV cell producers.
The second milestone of the program will be the commissioning of the
'mini pilot plant' in the ARISE Waterloo facility expected by the end of this
year. Once this has met internal economic, scalability and quality objectives,
the Company then plans to build a pilot plant in 2008, targeted to produce 50
tonnes of PV grade silicon in 2009. ARISE expects to start using internally
produced silicon in its PV cell production in 2008, and grow production
capacity beyond internal needs by 2012. The Company is starting preliminary
discussions with several Canadian provinces for the possible location of a
production plant. Once fully built out, a full-scale silicon production plant
would be expected to create 200 - 400 high tech engineering, process and
manufacturing jobs. The Company may require additional financing in order to
build a silicon production plant.
"Our silicon program is an integral part of our high efficiency PV cell
program. We expect that our wafer suppliers using ARISE silicon will achieve
higher performance than what is currently available to us on the market,
providing our PV cells technology with an additional performance advantage,"
said Ian MacLellan, President and CEO. "We are very pleased with the recent
silicon quality results and the overall progress with our PV silicon program
with the commissioning of SiRF(TM) 3.1."
