TORONTO, March 13 /CNW/ - Child safety is every caregiver's concern, but
are today's parents overprotecting their kids and raising risk-averse
children? Your Voice, TVO's online parenting series, explores the topic in a
multimedia, interactive primetime special combining TV and the internet,
Thursday April 10, 2008. At 7 pm, the program is live on TVO and simulcast at
TVOParents.com. It then continues exclusively online at 8 pm.
A generation ago, parents allowed kids to walk to school and play in
their neighbourhoods unsupervised. Today, that's almost unthinkable. Parents
chaperone their kids to school and to their extra-curricular activities, and
arrange for supervised play dates. While some may perceive that the world is
more dangerous, according to Statistics Canada, the overall national crime
rate in 2006, based on incidents reported to police, hit its lowest point in
over 25 years.
Are parents just much more protective than generations past? How can
parents encourage independence, curiosity, resourcefulness and risk-taking if
they're "bubble wrapping" their children? What are the consequences of being
too protective? Host Cheryl Jackson looks at these questions and more with our
- Barbara Coloroso, renowned parenting expert, lecturer and author of
Kids Are Worth It and The Bully, The Bullied and the Bystander
- Michael Ungar, professor at the School of Social Work at Halifax's
Dalhousie University and author of Too Safe for Their Own Good
Leading up to the special event, parents can visit TVOParents.com
beginning March 14 and take a quiz - developed in collaboration with
Coloroso - to find out where they fit on the protective-parent spectrum. Other
special web content includes articles that look at why over-protective
parenting is a concern, as well as tips on managing fears over kids' safety.
Parents can join in this special event by submitting their questions
online at the Your Voice page at TVOParents.com, or by phone at
1.888.891.1195. They can also connect with other parents in an online chat.
Your Voice at TVOParents.com normally airs every Tuesday live at 1 pm ET
and provides expert, real-time advice on how parents and caregivers can help
their kids navigate the issues they face at school.
