Approaching rainy weather a signal for Ontario homeowners to waterproof basements.

TORONTO, Sept. 29, 2011 /CNW/ - Autumn's rainy weather is an important signal for homeowners to proactively waterproof their homes so that potential damage from Winter ice and Spring thaw can be averted.

Soaked carpets, destroyed home theatres, mouldy toys strewn around damp playrooms, and sopping wet family photographs - are some of the sad remnants left by destructive pools of water encroaching basement floors. With the increase of finished basements in Ontario, basement waterproofing has become a necessity to protect the lifespan of our homes and their valuable contents.

Water and ice penetration are common problems for Canadian homeowners. With the approach of the cold, wet weather and its capacity for torrential rains and flash floods, the lowest parts of our homes are vulnerable to flooding. It's a matter of "when", not "if".

"In recent years, Ontario homeowners have faced increased levels of precipitation which challenged their drainage systems and exceeded the capacities of our cities' drainage systems at times," said DryShield Water Solutions Corp. President, Jonathan McMahon. "Without effective waterproofing systems, basement seepage and sometimes severe flooding can occur."

Many homeowners might not know it, but some Ontario cities subsidize waterproofing programs to supplement their efforts to improve the overall water system. For example, the City of Toronto's Basement Flooding Protection Subsidy Program offers consumers subsidies of up to $3,200  to assist with the cost of basement waterproofing. An example subsidy available to homeowners is for sump pump installations, which are subsidized up to $1750.* Sump pump installations can be one element of a larger internal waterproofing and drainage system.

This and other waterproofing subsidies are available to owners of single-family, duplex, and triplex residential homes. This information comes from the City of Toronto's Basement Flooding Protection Subsidy Program brochure and application, and it was current as of the time of writing.
