Appointments to the St. John's Port Authority

    OTTAWA, Feb. 21 /CNW Telbec/ - The Honourable Lawrence Cannon, Minister
of Transport, Infrastructure and Communities, today announced the appointments
of Mr. Russ Carrigan of Paradise, Newfoundland and Labrador, and Ms. Caron
Hawco of St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador, to the St. John's Port
Authority for a term of three years each.
    "I am pleased that Mr. Carrigan and Ms. Hawco have agreed to serve on the
board of directors of the St. John's Port Authority," said Minister Cannon.
"Their combined experience in communications and as members of other boards of
directors will be a significant asset to the board."
    Mr. Carrigan holds a bachelor of arts degree in political science and
French from Memorial University in St. John's. He has served most recently as
spokesperson for Fishery Products International Limited and FP Resources
Limited in St. John's and has an extensive background in media relations,
speechwriting and policy analysis. He has been a member of the board of
directors of the Fisheries Council of Canada and of One Ocean, Inc.
    Ms. Hawco holds a bachelor of arts degree in political science from
Memorial University and studied public relations at Humber College in Toronto.
She has worked extensively in communications, media relations and
consultation, advising numerous clients such as the Atlantic Canada
Opportunities Agency, the Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers and the
Government of Newfoundland and Labrador. She has also volunteered with the
East Coast Music Awards, the Red Cross, the Arthritis Society and the
International Association of Business Communicators. In addition, she is chair
of the board of directors of the Newfoundland Ocean Industries Association.
    The St. John's Port Authority is the Canada Port Authority (CPA)
established to manage the Port of St. John's under the Canada Marine Act. As a
CPA, the St. John's Port Authority benefits from greater management
flexibility, including increased freedom to develop contracts and borrow money
from commercial lenders.
