Appointments to the Hamilton Port Authority

    OTTAWA, Sept. 5 /CNW Telbec/ - The Honourable Lawrence Cannon, Minister
of Transport, Infrastructure and Communities, today announced the appointments
of Edward A. Minich and Allen Root to the board of directors of the Hamilton
Port Authority, for terms of three years each.
    "I am pleased that Mr. Minich and Mr. Root have agreed to serve on the
board of directors of the Hamilton Port Authority," said Minister Cannon. "The
Authority will greatly benefit from their extensive experience in management."
    Mr. Minich has a master's degree in business administration from McMaster
University where he was a former member of the board of governors. In
September 2004, he retired as President and CEO of Otis Canada Inc., the
world's largest manufacturer of elevators, escalators and moving walkways,
after a 30-year career in sales and general management positions.
    Mr. Root earned a master's degree in business administration from the
University of Windsor. In 2007, he retired as Executive Vice President and
Chief Operating Officer at Dofasco Inc. where he occupied various positions
since 1973. He is also a member of industry associations such as the Steel
Framing Alliance and the Metal Service Centre Institute.
    The Hamilton Port Authority is the Canada Port Authority (CPA)
established to manage the Port of Hamilton effective May 1, 2001, under the
Canada Marine Act. As a CPA, the Hamilton Port Authority benefits from greater
management flexibility, including increased freedom to develop contracts and
borrow money from commercial lenders.
    The Port of Hamilton has road, rail and air connections allowing easy
access to the manufacturing and service industries in southern Ontario. It
offers a combination of facilities and services ranging from transshipment
facilities to customs and dry-docking. Its marine terminals offer dry and
liquid bulk storage, warehousing for general cargo, heavy lift cargo
capability and container handling.
