Appointment to the Toronto Port Authority

    OTTAWA, Jan. 29 /CNW Telbec/ - The Honourable Lawrence Cannon, Minister
of Transport, Infrastructure and Communities, today announced the appointment
of Mr. Craig Rix to the Toronto Port Authority's board of directors as the
federal representative, for a term of three years.
    "I am pleased that Mr. Rix has agreed to serve on the board of the
Toronto Port Authority," said Minister Cannon. "His experience in the
statutory, regulatory and public policy making process will serve the board
    Mr. Rix holds a bachelor of laws from the University of Windsor, a master
of arts in public policy and administration, and a bachelor of arts with
honours from McMaster University. He is a partner with the law firm Hicks
Morley where he works out of their Toronto offices. His areas of practice
include labour and employment advocacy, public policy advocacy and strategic
planning and governance, representing employers in both the public and private
sectors. Mr. Rix's professional and community affiliations include the boards
of directors of the Canadian Association of Counsel to Employers and the
Ontario Chamber of Commerce. He is also on the advisory board of The Dominion
Institute and a member of the Ontario Economic Summit Steering Council.

    The Toronto Port Authority is the Canada Port Authority (CPA) established
to manage the Port of Toronto under the Canada Marine Act. As a CPA, the
Toronto Port Authority benefits from greater management flexibility, including
increased freedom to develop contracts and borrow money from commercial

    The Port of Toronto, situated in the downtown core of Canada's largest
city, provides transportation, distribution, storage and container services to
