Appointment to Saint John Port Authority

    OTTAWA, June 29 /CNW Telbec/ - The Honourable Lawrence Cannon, Minister
of Transport, Infrastructure and Communities, today announced the appointment
of Ms. Wendy L. McGee to the board of directors of the Saint John Port
Authority for a term of three years.
    "Ms. McGee has previously served on the board of the Saint John Port
Authority and has an extensive history of community involvement," said
Minister Cannon. "I am pleased that she is once again bringing her experience
to the authority's board of directors."
    Ms. Wendy L. McGee has served as a member of the Employment Insurance
Board of Referees since 2000; as an advisor to the New Brunswick Federation of
Labour on workplace health, safety and compensation issues since 1990; and as
a facilitator for the Canadian Labour Congress and the Canadian Union of
Public Employees since 1979. From 1990 to 2006, she was the executive director
of Saint John Labour Community Services, Inc. Ms. McGee's previous
appointments include membership on several boards of directors and committees,
including the Saint John Port Authority; and treasurer of the Saint John and
District Labour Council. She is a founding member of the Canadian Injured
Workers Alliance and was an officer of the Royal Canadian Sea Cadet movement.
    The Saint John Port Authority is the Canada Port Authority (CPA)
established to manage the Port of Saint John under the Canada Marine Act. As a
CPA, the Saint John Port Authority benefits from greater management
flexibility, including increased freedom to develop contracts and borrow money
from commercial lenders.
    The Port of Saint John handles about 27 million tonnes of cargo annually.
Its facilities handle all kinds of ships, including bulk carriers,
roll-on/roll-off vessels, forest products carriers, container ships, tankers
and conventional cargo vessels. In 2005, the port welcomed 37 cruise ships
carrying more than 90,000 passengers.
