Appointment to Port Alberni Port Authority

    OTTAWA, Dec. 6 /CNW Telbec/ - The Honourable Lawrence Cannon, Minister of
Transport, Infrastructure and Communities, today announced the appointment of
Mr. Gordon Blake as a member of the board of directors of the Port Alberni
Port Authority, British Columbia, for a term of three years.
    "I am pleased that Mr. Blake has agreed to serve on the board of the Port
Alberni Port Authority," said Minister Cannon. "His knowledge of the shipping
industry and commitment to the community of Port Alberni will be strong assets
on the board."
    Mr. Blake worked for Alberni Engineering and Shipyard Ltd. for
approximately 30 years - first as a machinist, then as sales manager for many
years and general manager for two years. In recent years he has been involved
in contracting work for MacMillan Bloedel, Norske Canada, Catalyst Paper Corp.
and K.G. Campbell Contracting Ltd.
    Mr. Blake has lived in Port Alberni, for 59 years. He is a veteran
community volunteer, currently acting as treasurer of the Western Vancouver
Island Industrial Heritage Society and as board member for the Port Alberni
    The Port Alberni Port Authority is the Canada Port Authority (CPA)
established to manage the Port of Alberni as of July 1, 1999, under the Canada
Marine Act. Under its mandate, the Port Alberni Port Authority has greater
management flexibility, including increased freedom to enter into contracts
and leases related to land and facilities; to set tariffs and fees; and to
borrow money from commercial sources.
    Port Alberni is a deep-sea port that offers a direct route to the Pacific
Rim, exporting an average of 300,000 tonnes of local forest products each
year, to Japanese, Asian, United States and European markets.
    The Port Alberni Port Authority is committed to the continued waterfront
development of the Alberni Inlet and the economic sustainability of the
Alberni Valley.
