MONTREAL, June 22 /CNW Telbec/ - Following in the footsteps of Pat Burns
(2007), Montréal Mayor Gérald Tremblay and The "Pocket Rocket" Henri Richard
(2008) - The 3rd edition of the PROCURE Walk of Courage claimed another
victory in the fight against prostate cancer. For the second consecutive year,
this event has been held by co-chair Mr. Tremblay. This year, he was pleased
to be accompanied by hockey legend: Dickie Moore.
"It is with great pleasure that I once again accepted to be co-chair of
PROCURE'S Walk of Courage 2009. I am pleased to see that once again
Montrealers and people from other regions of Québec joined us and displayed
their support for a cause that affects 1 in 7 men. This is the only event of
its kind in Quebec, and we are very pleased with the results" said the Mayor
of Montréal, Gérald Tremblay.
"Our goal was to help dispel the taboos associated with prostate cancer,
it takes a champion to beat prostate cancer and we met many champions at The
Walk." added Mr. Dickie Moore.
The PROCURE Walk of Courage marked a great victory in achieving to bring
together the three major professional sports clubs of Montreal, who united for
a 3rd year by supporting a single cause and who have helped PROCURE raise just
over 1 million dollars since 2007. Joining the 2009 team were: Dickie Moore
from the Montreal Canadiens, Eric Lapointe from the Montreal Alouettes, Joey
Saputo, Nick De Santis, Marc Dos Santos, Joey Gjertsen and Kevin Sakuda from
the Montreal Impact. PROCURE spokesmen Jean Pagé and Robin Burns stated "From
the beginning their support has given a voice to this silent disease, and has
contributed to saving many, many lives."
Diagnosed with prostate cancer in 1996, popular sportscaster Jean Pagé
adds "My son was only 9 months old when I was diagnosed, he is now 13. I
celebrate his birthday with him every year knowing that this was another year
given to me, my son and my family. My goal, is to give other men the same gift
I was given, we cannot afford to lose out on this important time out of
negligence or because we were not aware about this disease."
Final comments from the PROCURE Team: "Thank you for your support and see
you next year!"
Founded in 2003 by Marvyn Kussner, PROCURE was established to meet the
needs of men diagnosed with prostate cancer and all men at risk. Mr. Kussner,
respected businessman and philanthropist noted the lack of accessible
information and scientific knowledge regarding this disease while responding
to his own diagnosis. PROCURE, in conjunction with a Board of Directors
including other Quebec business leaders has since established a bilingual and
comprehensive website (www.procure.ca), the PROCURE BIOBANK (accelerating
research and discovery into prostate cancer) and works closely with the public
to provide the latest information about this disease.
