Alpha ATS achieves new activity milestones in April 2009

TORONTO, May 6 /CNW/ - Alpha Group today announced that the Alpha
Alternative Trading System (Alpha ATS) achieved new activity milestones during
April, 2009 with over 725 Million shares traded during the month. The growth
was particularly noticeable during the second half of the month with the Alpha
ATS reaching an average volume market share in TSX listed securities of almost
8.5% across all Canadian transparent marketplaces. This was accompanied by way
of a staggering 300% increase in the number of daily trades over the course of
the month, translating to increased liquidity.
"Another step in our journey" noted Jos Schmitt CEO of the Alpha Group,
"It is the result of market participants pointing more order flow towards
Alpha in a progressive and controlled process of adopting a true multiple
marketplace environment in Canada".
"What fuels our growth is the combination of the fairness of our model,
our technology leadership and the support of the industry for an industry
driven initiative. Growth also uncovers new challenges or highlights known
ones, such as the need for fair and efficient consolidated Canadian market
data, the need to determine what the right opening price is for a security
when multiple markets provide a variety of different prices, and the need for
an efficient Trade Through Protection mechanism, ... multiple areas where
Alpha voiced its concerns and works with all industry stakeholders to identify
the best solutions for the Canadian market as a whole." added Jos Schmitt.
Alpha's April Newsletter which can be viewed on the Alpha website or can
be obtained by e-mail, provides an in depth look into the Alpha market
statistics and the Alpha technology.
