Aliant helps children in need in Atlantic Canada as Backpacks for Kids donates over $96,000 worth of school supplies

SAINT JOHN, NB, Aug. 28 /CNW/ - Aliant employees and Aliant Pioneer
Volunteers are distributing 2400 backpacks full of school supplies to children
in need around Atlantic Canada this week. The donation comes from Backpacks
for Kids, an annual Aliant program which aims to make back-to-school easier
for kids throughout the region. While the backpacks were provided by Aliant,
they were filled with new school supplies by Aliant employees, retirees and
Aliant Pioneer Volunteers.
"We had a great response from our employees again this year," said Glen
LeBlanc, Aliant's Chief Financial Officer. "The generosity of our employees
speaks to the dedication they have to their communities and we are thrilled
that Aliant is able to help kids in the Atlantic Provinces have a better start
to the school year."
Around Atlantic Canada Aliant employees "adopted" backpacks which they
filled with their own donation of school supplies. Employees adopted backpacks
as individuals, with co-workers and as part of departmental teams.
Backpacks are being distributed by the Aliant employees and the Aliant
Pioneer Volunteers to schools and community based organizations around
Atlantic Canada that support children and families including the Single Parent
Association of St. John's; Centennial School in Saint John, Harbourview
Elementary School in Halifax and the Eastern and Western School Boards in
Prince Edward Island. In total, $96,000 worth of school supplies were donated
to Atlantic Canadian Children.
