Alcoa Canada employees take part in National Waste Reduction Week and provide volunteer services to their community

    MONTREAL, Oct. 12 /CNW Telbec/ - The employees at Alcoa's various
facilities in Canada have decided to join forces in the framework of the Alcoa
Foundation's Month of Service, and to engage in volunteer services within
their community by actively participating in National Waste Reduction Week.
Therefore, throughout the whole of the month of October, and more
particularly during the weekend of October 12, 13 and 14, several employees at
the aluminum smelters in Baie-Comeau, Deschambault and Bécancour, and the rod
plant in Bécancour, will participate in environmental action in their
community, along with their colleagues from the headquarters in Montréal, the
Reynolds, ASL and Moulage Aéronautiques Alcoa plants in Laval, and the Kawneer
facilities in Pointe-Claire. They will be working on a volunteer basis to
build, clean, remove, reuse or recycle, and thus will contribute in various
ways to reduce waste. In all, it is estimated that roughly 660 hours of
volunteer services will be offered by our people in their community during
National Waste Reduction Week.

Making a difference in our community

"More than a value, community service is a way of life for people at
Alcoa. And Month of Service is one more opportunity to put forward this way of
life of our people, and to create the momentum needed to prompt everyone to
participate simultaneously in an activity serving the enhancement of the
quality of life in our community," explains Jean-Pierre Gilardeau, President
of Alcoa Canada. "We work and we live in a community. Isn't it only natural
then to want to enhance the quality of life in our immediate environment?" he
In addition to this important activity held in the framework of Month of
Service, eight other similar volunteer activities are planned for the month of
October, not only here in Canada, but also elsewhere in the world where Alcoa
is present. Last year, the first edition of the Worldwide Month of Service
brought together 36,743 people-including over 15,000 employees-who joined in
657 volunteer service activities organized in over 200 communities located in
36 countries.
