QUEBEC CITY, Jan. 30 /CNW Telbec/ - Mr. Ghislain Picard has been
re-elected, by acclamation, to the appointment of Regional Chief of the
Assembly of First Nations of Quebec and Labrador (AFNQL), no other candidate
having come forward before January 10 2006, closing date of the nomination
period. This was confirmed today, at the Chiefs' Assembly of the AFNQL which
is being held in Quebec City. Mr. Picard, an Innu of Pessamit, will be
embarking in his sixth mandate of office, as Regional Chief.
"I am greatly honored to be entrusted with this new mandate by our
leaders. The support I have been receiving from the Chiefs since 1992 is
undeniable, and this motivates me even more in striving for the improvement of
the socioeconomic conditions of my brothers and sisters of the First Nations",
declared Mr. Picard.
"Last fall, in Mashteuiatsh, the First Nations Socioeconomic Forum was
held, the first ever to take place. This was a step forward in the right
direction in our relations with the federal and provincial governments.
However, the work is only beginning, the governments still have a huge step to
reach in the recognition and respect of our rights", indicated the Chief of
The Regional Chief of the AFNQL represents the Chiefs of 43 communities
of Quebec and Labrador. The Regional Chief also sits on the Executive
Committee of the Assembly of the First Nations (AFN).
