AECL Provides Status Report on NRU Reactor

    CHALK RIVER, ON, Dec. 4 /CNW/ - Atomic Energy of Canada Limited (AECL) is
extending the outage of its National Research Universal (NRU) reactor, at its
Chalk River facilities, to complete the installation of safety-related
equipment. AECL places the highest priority on the safe operation of its
facilities, and is committed to returning NRU to operation as soon as
    NRU entered a regularly scheduled maintenance shutdown on November 18. A
decision was made to remain in shutdown and make the modifications required
for the installation of two new motor starters for the reactor cooling pumps,
and to connect the motors to an additional back-up power supply. Safety was
never compromised, and NRU operated safely up to the point of the current
    "AECL recognizes the important role NRU plays in the supply and delivery
of medical isotopes to patients around the world", said AECL's Senior
Vice-President and Chief Nuclear Officer, Brian McGee. "We understand that
patients will be impacted by this development and we are focused on completing
the work procedures as quickly as possible."
