AECL contracts demonstrate ACR's readiness for the nuclear renaissance

Organization of CANDU Industries members are ready to deliver on ACR-1000

PICKERING, ON, May 6 /CNW/ - Atomic Energy of Canada Limited's (AECL)
announcement of more than $15 million in contracts awarded to qualified CANDU
companies clearly demonstrates the ACR-1000's state of readiness for the
growing worldwide market for nuclear power. The member companies of The
Organization of CANDU Industries (OCI) are ready to deliver the parts,
components and services to bring the ACR-1000 into service.
"With hundreds of reactors in the planning stages around the world,
successful marketing of the ACR-1000 will bring billions of dollars in
contracts for Canadian manufacturers, based largely in Ontario," says OCI
President Dr. Neil Alexander. "This could be an oasis of opportunity in an
otherwise dried up desert for the manufacturing sector. With such incredible
opportunities for job and wealth creation, the nuclear business is clearly one
that Ontario should be nurturing and investing in."
The nuclear industry is on the verge of a dramatic expansion around the
world with Canada as one of an elite few countries to market an advanced
Generation III+ nuclear reactor design. Current estimates indicate more than
200 reactors will be built by 2020 and that even more will be required for
jurisdictions around the world to meet their greenhouse gas emission reduction
"A fully mobilized and efficient supply chain is critical to the success
of a large project such as a nuclear plant construction," says Dr. Alexander.
"Over the past 30 years of continuous work supporting the construction of
CANDU reactors around the world, OCI's member companies have developed an
impeccable reputation for delivering parts and services consistently on-time
and on-budget, and are poised and ready to meet increased demand."
