    Saskatchewan's Evan Biddell wins Project Runway Canada

    TORONTO, Dec. 18 /CNW/ - Slice(TM) viewers across the country tuned in
last night to watch as 23 year-old Saskatoon, SK native Evan Biddell was named
the first-ever winner of Project Runway Canada by host Iman. In a two-hour
special finale episode, Biddell beat out Lucian Matis of Toronto and Marie
Genevieve Cyr of Montreal, after showing collections in front of Canadian
fashion elite at Toronto's L'Oréal Fashionweek.
    Along with his rightful place in the spotlight, Biddell was awarded the
top prize, including $100,000 to begin his own fashion line, a professional
portfolio photo shoot provided by L'Oréal Paris, a retail mentorship with
Winners and a cover and feature spread showing his winning collection in ELLE
Canada's February 2008 issue.
    "It was apparent from the beginning that Biddell had the skill - not to
mention attitude - necessary to win Project Runway Canada. The secret was
getting him to tap into that potential week after week to really show us what
he was capable of. He has grown so much through this process, presenting a
collection at L'Oréal Fashionweek that was inspired, well constructed,
stunning and wearable and the judges and I were immensely impressed with his
work. I am incredibly proud of Biddell. I believe he is not only the next "It"
Canadian designer, but that he has the ability to make a name for himself on
an international level," says Iman.
    "Winning Project Runway Canada, Who'd've thunk? When I arrived in
Toronto, I figured it was a business trip. Then after meeting the other
designers, it became more like pleasure. They are some of the most amazing
people from all walks of life. All 12 of us deserved to win this competition,
but there could only be one - and it's The Biddell!," adds Biddell. "The
inspiration behind my final collection came from an extremely chaotic place. I
channeled a very curious energy through the cut, and to be quite honest I
wasn't sure if the message would be received. I'm ecstatic that the judges
understood my line and appreciate the faith they have in me. When Iman called
me a "visionary" it was like she stripped off a heavy layer of insecurity.
Being the youngest guy there, the only self taught designer in the competition
and coming from Saskabush, I know ANYTHING is possible. I'm living proof."
    Respected fashion designer Brian Bailey served as Mentor for the series
and judges Rita Silvan, Editor-in-Chief of ELLE Canada, and Shawn Hewson,
co-founder of leading Canadian sportswear label Bustle Clothing, joined Iman
on the runway to make the final decision that Biddell did measure up.
    Of the 12 models that joined the designers on their journey toward
fashion's "promised land", Ashley Hart, who modeled most of Biddell's
challenge outfits and was his lead model in his finale collection, has won the
model's top prize. Ashley will appear wearing Biddell's winning collection on
the cover and in the feature spread in the February 2008 issue of ELLE Canada.
