SMS and MMS Messages Represent Over Half of all Data Traffic

SAO PAULO, Brazil, Oct. 28 /CNW/ - Acision, the world's leading messaging

messaging market in Latin America will have grown by a further 25 per cent.
Acision's messaging solutions support 31 operators across the 35
countries in Latin America. This includes 9 of the top 10 market leaders who
together have a combined market share of over 85% of the Latin American mobile
data services market, according to information from Teleco.
The arrival of 3G in the region and the expansion of mobile data services
mean that Latin America is now experiencing impressive growth in the mobile
messaging market. Frost & Sullivan report that within the Latin American SMS
market, growth will come from exploring new markets and the offering of new

separate study, the GSM Association and the portal ConvergenciaLatina state
that SMS and MMS messages now represent 52% of the total data traffic in Latin
"In Latin America, Brazil has the largest market in terms of mobile data
services. However, users in Brazil send only 6 messages per person, per month
compared to the SMS power users in Venezuela who send an average of 8 per
person, per day", said Eduardo Bueno, Vice-President of Marketing and Sales
for Acision in Latin America. "More than half of mobile data service users in
the region already use SMS messages to communicate and with the expansion of
new SMS-based applications, we anticipate exponential increases in the use of
mobile messaging by 2011. Acision will use its global expertise to enable
local network operators to exploit the growth opportunities created through
innovative SMS-based applications and services."
