MONTREAL, April 9 /CNW Telbec/ - Dr. Jean-François Lajoie was elected
President of the Québec Medical Association (QMA) during activities
accompanying the organization's annual meeting. Dr. Lajoie is an internist and
clinical professor at Université de Sherbrooke, and his main focus during his
two-year mandate will be to highlight the importance of family medicine.
"As a specialist, I am in a good position to understand the importance of
family physicians. Every day in my medical practice, I have to deal with
problems caused by a lack of general practitioners. They are the people who
form the hard core of primary care. In order to fully assume this role, they
must have access to the best practices and best technologies, in public
institutions as well as independent clinics," stated Dr. Jean-François Lajoie.
"During the QMA convention this weekend, my predecessor, Dr. Jean-Bernard
Trudeau, showed how introducing a multidisciplinary approach and using
information technologies could save physicians 20% more time. When applied to
family physicians in the Montréal region, the time gained is the equivalent of
250 additional general practitioners, without spending a single dollar on
education," he explained.
Dr. Jean-François Lajoie also says he is encouraged by the Québec
government's initiative to create a working group to resolve the problem of
the shortage of family physicians. In fact, the QMA will be part of the round
table on access to family physicians and primary care services.
"During my upcoming mandate and the activities I will be carrying out,
the QMA will continue the efforts made by my predecessors over the past years
to create closer ties with students, residents and young physicians. The
harmonious integration of young physicians will continue to be an important
aspect and I intend to increase the initiatives designed to support them
during their first years of practice," said the QMA's new president.
