A milestone graduation at our Computer Literacy Centre

TORONTO, June 29 /CNW/ - Yonge Street Mission's TD Securities Computer
Literacy Centre awarded the 1,000th computer to a young graduate of our
Introductory Computer Course at our Spring 2007 Graduation ceremony on
Thursday, June 28th, held at Nelson Mandela Park Public School in Regent Park.
"If only more of our society could appreciate this, what a change it
would make for the world we live in," said a guest.
Forty-eight children received their own computer; all computers were
donated to the Mission and then reconditioned. The computer awarded to
Abdelbacet Rezig was the 1,000th computer given to a young graduate from our
Regent Park neighbourhood.
'Bacet' was selected by his numeric order in the class. His story is
representative of many children in our community: arriving as an infant with
his refugee family, "It wasn't good, with the war going on. We had to leave,"
and now looking forward to a promising future as a teacher with skills gained
at the Computer Lab, "I want to use my computer to do research, homework and
surfing on the internet."
Rizwan Khalfan, Managing Director and Chief Information Officer, TD
Securities, was the keynote speaker. Our young graduates presented recognition
awards to Dell Canada, AOL Canada, Microsoft Canada, Los Silverados, IT
Xchange, the Government of Ontario, Tippet Foundation and TD Securities for
their ongoing support.
"This is such a wonderful thing for our family, thank you so much!" said
a mother, wearing a sari, as she waited for her husband to carry out her
daughter's new computer.
Since the TD Securities Computer Literacy Centre opened in 1999 over
2,400 children have enrolled in programs spanning the primary to high school
years. We offer home computers as a necessary component of each child's
academic progress, leveling the playing field for children in low-income
families. All computers were donated by businesses, government agencies and
