MONTREAL, June 7 /CNW Telbec/ - The 2009 Leucan's Shaved Head Challenge
took place today in an atmosphere filled with solidarity across the province.
Indeed, the results of this edition are exceptional and exceed last year with
more than 7,400 shaved heads and more than $4 million raised in donations for
children with cancer! Furthermore, the 2009 Challenge has reached a milestone:
30,000 heads shaved since the very first edition in 2001.
"In the Shaved Head Challenge, the audacious participants, men and women,
of all ages and backgrounds, offer locks of hair, but mostly they give of
themselves - all in support to Leucan children in their fight against cancer,
underlines Michèle Barbara Pelletier, Shaved Head Challenge provincial
spokesperson for a second consecutive year. It's a wave of solidarity that
means a lot for them and their family."
For Leucan, the primary goal in collecting funds during this event is to
allow generous contributions to clinical research, which further increases the
chances of recovery, and to provide the many services offered to
cancer-stricken children and their families: welcome, emotional support and
follow-up, financial assistance, massage therapy, hosting and support services
in playrooms, socio-recreational activities, school life services as well as
end-of-life and bereavement follow-up services.
A success all across Quebec
With more than 25 event locations throughout Quebec (mainly on June 7),
and with group challenges in companies and schools, the Shaved Head Challenge
remains the largest "shave-o-thon" of its kind in the province for the amount
of participants, money raised and simultaneous event locations.
