A Call to Canadians to Improve Self-Esteem in Young Girls

    Change a girl's life on February 29th by hosting a Dove Self-Esteem
    Fund workshop

TORONTO, Jan. 24 /CNW/ - For the first time ever on one simultaneous day,
Canadians from coast-to-coast can get involved in the Dove Campaign for Real
Beauty. On February 29 those who are concerned about the state of young girls'
self-esteem are invited to be a part of the Dove Global Workshop Day, an
important date for young girls worldwide. Dove encourages citizens to host
workshops in their community with one singular goal: improving the self-esteem
of young girls across Canada and around the world.
Shockingly, 92 per cent of young girls and women want to change some
aspect of their appearance(*). The Dove Global Workshop Day was created with the
goal of slowly changing this statistic. On this day, Dove hopes hundreds of
workshops will be held by Canadians in their homes, their children's schools,
extra-curricular groups and in other small gatherings of girls.
The Dove Self-Esteem workshops explore the definition of beauty, images
of beauty in popular culture, and how societal pressures affect the way young
girls feel about themselves. Entertaining workshop activities make the issues
relevant, while encouraging and opening up dialogue between young girls and
their mentors about beauty, body image and self-esteem. The purchase of Dove
products helps to make programs like this possible.
This spectacular global initiative offers citizens worldwide the
opportunity to help broaden girls' definition of beauty. For Canadians
interested in hosting their own self-esteem workshop, a free "Train the
Trainer" CD/DVD is available by calling 1-866-376-DOVE (3683). It should be
noted that the material has been developed to be suitable for both males and
These CD/DVDs contain all the information needed to prepare for and host
a workshop. CD/DVDs should be ordered by February 18 for delivery prior to the
Dove Global Workshop Day - February 29, 2008.

The Dove Self-Esteem Fund was created to be a force of positive change in
the way women and young girls perceive and embrace beauty. A portion of
proceeds from every sale of a Dove product is directed towards programs like
Global Workshop Day and other Campaign for Real Beauty initiatives. On
February 29, Dove employees around the world will be leading workshops in
their local communities.

(*) The Dove Self-Esteem Fund commissioned the Beyond Stereotypes study
to address the need for global literature and insights into factors
influencing self-esteem and self-expression in women. Research firm
StrategyOne conducted the research, in collaboration with Dr. Nancy
Etcoff of Harvard University, with the expert consultation of Dr.
Susie Orbach of the London School of Economics.

The study is based on quantitative data collected from a global
survey of 3,300 women (ages 15-64) in Canada, the United States,
Mexico, Brazil, Italy, Germany, Japan, China, Saudi Arabia and the
    United Kingdom.
