A battle we can win: Reducing Healthcare Associated Infections by 50%

    OTTAWA, Sept. 22 /CNW Telbec/ - During this election campaign 1000
patients will die in Canadian hospitals of preventable Healthcare Associated
Infections (HAIs).
Estimates are hospital infections kill 8,000-12,000 Canadians each year.
Recovery for another 250,000 patients will be prolonged by treatment for HAIs.
The cost to Canada's healthcare system is more than $1Billion annually;
personal cost to patients and their families immeasurable.
"It is time - past time - Canada develops a National Commitment and
National Strategy to reduce C.difficile and MRSA infections by 50%" said
Dr. Raphael Saginur, Chair of the National Infectious Diseases Day (NIDD)
coalition of Canada's infectious disease experts and practitioners. "A
comprehensive National Strategy to control HAIs has been successful in many
other countries."
NIDD members called this week for the Government of Canada to provide
$200 Million in federal funding to bolster the capacity of the Canadian health
care system to diagnose, prevent, control and treat known, new and emerging
infectious diseases.
Partners in this coalition include the Canadian Foundation for Infectious
Diseases (CFID); Association of Medical Microbiology and Infectious Disease
Canada (AMMI Canada); Community and Hospital Infection Control
Association-Canada (CHICA-Canada), Canadian Association for Clinical
Microbiology and Infectious Diseases (CACMID).and private-sector industry
partners working in the areas of infectious diseases and medical microbiology.
