400 Infection Control Professionals Meet in Edmonton

    Will discuss the challenges facing health care with the emergence of new
    infections, restructuring of organizations and development of effective

    EDMONTON, June 4 /CNW/ - This is an invitation to attend the Community
and Hospital Infection Control Association - Canada (CHICA-Canada) 2007
National Education Conference, to be held in Edmonton, Alberta at the Shaw
Conference Centre, June 9-14, 2007.

    Some of the sessions that are greatly anticipated include:

    Sunday, June 10
    Philip Hassen, Chief Executive Officer of the Canadian Patient Safety
Institute, will launch the 2007 National Hand Hygiene Campaign, a
collaboration of CPSI, CHICA-Canada, the Canadian Council for Health Services
Accreditation, and the Public Health Agency. The simple act of handwashing can
save health care millions of dollars in prevention of infections acquired in
health care settings.
    A media briefing will be held on Sunday, June 10 from 4:45 pm to 5:15 pm
in Room 17/18 of the Shaw Conference Centre. This is an opportunity to ask
questions of Mr. Hassen; Joanne Laalo, President of CHICA-Canada; and Dr. Dick
Zoutman, CHICA-Canada Physician Director.

    Monday, June 11
    Collaborating with Patient Safety - What does it mean for Infection
    Prevention and Control

    A full morning session with topics such as Safer Health Care Now,
Reducing rates of healthcare associated infection, and Patient Safety Tools.

    Tuesday, June 12
    -   Denise Murphy, President of the Association of Professionals in
        Infection Prevention and Control and Epidemiology (U.S.) will speak
        on Zero Tolerance, the rationale for this approach to reducing
        hospital-acquired infections, and what the term 'zero tolerance'
        actually means for infection control and patient safety initiatives.

    Wednesday, June 13
    -   Ethical Dilemmas around the disclosure of nosocomial infections, the
        ethics of planning with limited resources, and care versus isolation
        will be discussed in an afternoon concurrent session.

    Thursday, June 14
    -   A panel of infection prevention and control experts from across
        Canada will address how provinces are responding to Infection
        Prevention and Control Challenges.
