Andrew McDougall recognized among Canada's Top Lawyers Under 40

OTTAWA, Nov. 13 /CNW Telbec/ - Perley-Robertson, Hill & McDougall LLP/s.r.l. is proud to congratulate Andrew de Lotbinière McDougall on being selected one of Lexpert's "2009 Rising Stars: Leading Lawyers Under 40". This prestigious award recognizes Canadian lawyers and corporate counsel under the age of 40 for their major accomplishments, responsiveness to change, interpersonal skills, business acumen, and the views of their peers. Winners were selected by an Advisory Board composed of experienced lawyers representing all regions and fields of practice in Canada. The honour comes less than 10 months after Mr. McDougall returned to Canada to establish the Firm's International Arbitration Group. He is only the fifth Ottawa lawyer to be recognized by Lexpert since the Award's inception in 2006 and is the only international arbitration practitioner to be recognized in 2009.

Mr. McDougall joined Perley-Robertson, Hill & McDougall as Partner and Head of the International Arbitration Group in January 2009. An Ottawa native, Mr. McDougall returned to establish the Firm's International Arbitration Group after nine years at leading international arbitration firm White & Case in Paris, France where he was a Partner doing international arbitration full-time. Mr. McDougall has acted as counsel on cases involving disputes of up to several billion dollars in North and South America, Europe, the Middle East, Africa, and Asia. He also serves as an international arbitrator. Educated in Canada with degrees in common and civil law, he is fluent in English and French and qualified to practise law in Ontario, Québec, and England & Wales. A frequent speaker and writer on international arbitration and recognized in leading international arbitration directories and publications, he has taught international arbitration at Université Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne and has extensive experience in international arbitration advocacy training. Mr. McDougall will be teaching international arbitration at University of Ottawa in 2010.

"It's an honour to be recognized by my Canadian peers less than a year after returning to Canada and establishing the Firm's International Arbitration Group," says Mr. McDougall. "I believe Canada has an important role to play in international arbitration and our Firm is well established to be a leader. I look forward to continuing to build the practice and providing value to Canadian and international businesses and governments by delivering high quality legal services at a sensible cost and in line with their business objectives."

"I am delighted to have the opportunity to be working with Andrew. He is a terrific person in every way," said Barry Leon, Partner in the International Arbitration Group at Perley-Robertson, Hill & McDougall. "His level of experience and knowledge in international arbitration is rare in Canada. Lexpert Canada's recognition of Andrew is also recognition of the growing presence of Canadians as counsel in international arbitration. I share Andrew's belief that we can build a Canadian-based, globally competitive, international arbitration counsel practice."

Perley-Robertson, Hill & McDougall is based in Ottawa, Canada's national capital. It is a multicultural, bilingual city at the crossroads of English/American common law and French civil law. The Firm's International Arbitration Group is well-positioned to be responsive to what international arbitration clients need in today's economy and to what they will demand in the future. Given the Firm's size and structure, it has the fee structure flexibility to enter into value billing and other alternative fee arrangements. It is also free of conflicts that often exist in larger firms.

International arbitration is used to resolve disputes arising out of international contracts and bilateral and multilateral investment treaties. It allows parties from different legal and cultural backgrounds to choose arbitrators to resolve their disputes in a neutral, private, and efficient forum instead of resorting to national courts. The enforcement of international arbitral awards is supported by international treaties acceded to by most countries in the world. While international arbitrations take place in all parts of the world, international arbitration counsel are not limited by geography. English is the most frequently used language and international arbitration advocacy much resembles advocacy in Canada.
