20th Edition of Défi Canderel a Huge Success - Despite recession, event sets new record for money raised

MONTREAL, May 1 /CNW Telbec/ - With fierce competition and beautiful
weather, the 20th anniversary of the Défi Canderel will not be forgotten. By
1:00 p.m in excess of $350,000 had already been turned in, breaking the single
year record of $330,000 raised. Not only did the 2009 edition set a new
fundraising record, but brought the event's 20-year total to over 6 million
dollars raised.
The Défi this year featured a series of mini athletic challenges in
addition to the run, as the event changed format moving towards an Olympic
theme that will be fully implemented in 2010. The 2009 edition also marked the
first year teams were not required to wear costumes.
"While today's activities are aimed at creating a fun filled, competitive
atmosphere for corporations and business people in Montreal, our objective is
to deal with cancer, a disease that is now affecting one in three Canadians,"
said Jonathan Wener, Chairman, Défi Canderel. "I want to thank the countless
individuals and corporations who have given their support and made this event
possible. This money is going to make a real difference in the lives those
affected by cancer."
In total, 40 teams from companies and organizations across Montreal
competed against one another in a series of fitness challenges to raise money
for cancer research. Winning teams included:

Great West Life Assurance Company- Most pledges raised
YM-YWHA Wolf Pack - Most pledges raised by a non-profit group
Inspec-Sol Inc.- Early bird registration prize
    McGill University - Challenge winner

    About Défi Canderel

Since 1989, Canderel has been organizing one of Montreal's biggest
fund-raisers. In that time, more than 6 million dollars has been raised for
cancer research at the Goodman Cancer Centre at McGill University and the
Institut du cancer de Montréal at l'Université de Montréal. This money has
yielded tangible, measurable results. Specialized equipment, research grants
and much more has been made possible, and the universities involved take pride
each year in revealing what the money raised was used for.

Many thanks to our sponsors - Great West Life, Stikeman Elliott, Reliance
Construction, Mansfield Athletic Club, Zenergy Communications and
    CNW Telbec.
