100 Kilometres of New Lanes Officially Completed and Opened

TORONTO, Sept. 19 /CNW/ - Drivers throughout the GTA can expect less
congestion and faster commutes as 407 ETR today announced the completion of a
two-year project to add 100 kilometres of new lanes between Highways 401 and
Opening in stages as construction progressed, the final 27 kilometres of
new lanes, between Highways 401 and 410 in Peel Region, were completed ahead
of schedule.
"This is great news for 407 ETR customers and good news for all drivers
in the GTA," said Antonio de Santiago, President and Chief Executive Officer
of 407 ETR. "The opening of these lanes will increase traffic capacity through
the busiest section of our highway by 33 percent - and that will also help
relieve congestion on other public highways and roads."
Building 100 kilometres of new lanes down the centre median of an
existing six-lane freeway, handling over 400,000 trips on an average workday,
is a big undertaking. The project required:

    - 375,000 cubic metres of excavation
    - 200,000 cubic metres of concrete
    - 105,000 hours of labour
    - 44 existing bridge structures widened
    - 11 kilometres of storm sewer pipes

"We're proud of our reputation for improving traffic flow before
congestion becomes a problem," said de Santiago. "Once again, we've opened new
lanes ahead of schedule."
