York Region transit strike suspended as union allows re-vote on settlement

TORONTO, Feb. 21 /CNW/ - The strike against Veolia Transportation in the southwest area of York Region Transit scheduled to begin Tuesday morning has been suspended by the union, pending a re-vote on the company's settlement offer later this week.

Amalgamated Transit Union Local 113 was presented on Sunday night with a petition for the re-vote from "a significant majority" of the membership. The settlement had originally been rejected last Wednesday.

"This is an unusual situation," said Local 113 President Bob Kinnear, "but in view of the stakes for both our members and the public, and the large majority of members who signed the petition, we will conduct a re-vote on the settlement."

Kinnear announced the re-vote in a phone message to the members early this afternoon. He directed all members to report for their scheduled shifts on Tuesday. The union is arranging the re-vote for later this week.

Note: Bob Kinnear will not be available for media interviews today.
