YMCA Relay for Strong Kids raises $42,000 to help families across the GTA

TORONTO, June 1, 2011 /CNW/ - More than 2,000 runners/walkers and 140 volunteers gathered at Exhibition Place on Tuesday evening for the 31st annual YMCA Relay for Strong Kids. Despite the humid weather, teams of four laced up to walk or run 5 km around the grounds and collected pledges to raise money in support of the YMCA Strong Kids Campaign, which gives more kids and families access to critical YMCA programs.

Runners and walkers were entertained by Toronto's Top 40 Cover Band, Jen and the Men, while Toronto CTV Reporter, Carol Charles, pulled the trigger to start the race. Massage stations were set up for runners to relax after the race and an award ceremony concluded the evening.

"The YMCA Relay is a fantastic way to get the entire community involved in an important cause," said Linton Carter, VP, Community Philanthropy, YMCA of Greater Toronto. "Thanks to the participants and fundraisers, the YMCA is helping to provide access to critical programs and services."

Organizations leading the pack with the most teams included:

  • Hydro One, 65 teams
  • MacLaren McCann, 37 teams
  • Rogers Communications, 22 teams
  • Toronto Hydro, 21 teams

We'd also like to thank our generous sponsors: PepsiCo Canada, Steam Whistle, DTP and CTV.
