Woodland Primary School in Grand Falls-Windsor, NFLD wins visit from renowned picture book author Jan Brett, beating out 5701 schools in international contest

TORONTO, April 4 /CNW/ - Over the weekend, Woodland Primary School in Grand Falls-Windsor, Newfoundland finished first in an international contest to win a visit from Jan Brett, one of the most successful children's book creators of all time. Jan regularly occupies the #1 slot on the New York Times best-seller list and has been beloved in the publishing industry for over 30 years.

Woodland Primary, which teaches approximately 400 children between Kindergarten and Grade 3 in a small community of less than 14,000, won out over 5,700 other schools and libraries from over 20 countries worldwide in an online competition. Jan Brett plans to visit the winning school in the 2011-2012 school year.

For the past 10 years, Jan Brett has been running the contest, and the frenzy of competition has been building with each successive contest. This year, the total number of entries came in at over 22,000 with contestants applying from as far afield as Iceland, United Arab Emirates, Pakistan and Nigeria. Woodland Primary garnered over 2,200 of the entries.

Jan Brett said "Congratulations to everyone at Woodland Primary in Grand Falls-Windsor Newfoundland! I'm looking forward to my first trip to their beautiful province."

Maureen Hiscock, the teacher that organized the campaign, said "I never thought when I entered our school in this contest it would become this BIG. We love Jan Brett!"

Brett is best known for her classic Christmas stories, including The Hat, The Mitten, The Three Snow Bears and Gingerbread Baby. With over 37 million books in print, there are no libraries or elementary schools that do not have at least one of her books on their shelves. Her books have been chosen as "Best Children's Books of the Year" by Newsweek, The New Yorker, Parents magazine, and Redbook.
