Weight Watchers Teams with Running Room to Inspire Canadians to Walk 5K on June 12

OAKVILLE, ON, April 14 /CNW/ - Weight Watchers Canada announced the launch of its second annual Walk-It Challenge, an initiative that encourages people to incorporate physical activity, in conjunction with healthier eating habits, into their weight loss goals. Kicking off this month, Weight Watchers members and online subscribers will have access to an easy to use six-week training guide to help them get moving toward walking a 5K, while making regular physical activity a part of their lifestyle.

Weight Watchers Canada's commitment to promoting physical activity as part of a healthy lifestyle aligns with the Canadian Physical Activity Guidelines, released in January 2011 by the Canadian Society for Exercise Physiology (CSEP), which recommends that adults aged 18-64 should accumulate at least 150 minutes of physical activity - such as brisk walking - per week, in bouts of 10 minutes or more, to achieve health benefits and help reduce the risk of heart disease, stroke, high blood pressure, certain types of cancer, osteoporosis, and obesity.*

For the second consecutive year, Weight Watchers Canada is partnering with fitness experts Running Room, who will be hosting walks at Running Room locations across Canada. The 5K walking events are free and open to Weight Watchers members, subscribers and the general public, and walkers can participate on their own or as a group.

"The Weight Watchers Walk-It Challenge is about inspiring Canadians to make exercise part of their daily lives. If you embrace a walking program by simply taking it one day at a time, you realize that what may have seemed unattainable at first becomes completely attainable, and that's very empowering," said Paul Schiffner, General Manager, Weight Watchers Canada. "Our partners at Running Room share this same belief with us, and we are proud to be partnering with Running Room again this year to help Canadians on this journey of making physical activity a part of their daily lives."

Academy Award-winning actress and Grammy Award-winning recording artist Jennifer Hudson is a strong supporter of the Walk-It Challenge, as walking was one of the first steps she took to achieve a healthier lifestyle. "After the birth of my son, I made walking a priority in my life," said Jennifer Hudson. "I knew I wanted to establish an environment for my son that encouraged healthy eating and physical activity. Walking was such a natural and easy way for me to get active. That's why I'm so excited to support the Weight Watchers Walk-It Challenge and encourage everyone to take the first step towards achieving their weight loss goals!"

In Canada, "Walk-It Day," is June 12, 2011, and Weight Watchers is encouraging walkers to join one of the 98 Weight Watchers 5K walks being held across the country at Running Room locations. Last year, more than 7,000 Canadians participated in Walk-It Day, and this year's event is expected to attract more than 10,000 participants from coast to coast.  Canadians can visit www.weightwatchers.ca/walkit and learn how to participate, access the six-week training guide, and join or start a walking group.
