WagJag Reveals: With less than a month until the holidays, nearly half of Canadians are stuck for gift ideas, and close to half of us are getting ready to re-gift!

New WagJag.com and Jaunt.ca survey reveals holiday gifting preferences and habits of Canadians as we head into what industry experts expect to be the "barganista" holidays.

TORONTO, Nov. 30, 2011 /CNW/ - If you're not exactly sure what to get everyone on your holiday gift list, you're in good company. A new survey commissioned by WagJag.com and Jaunt.ca, Canada's leading group-buying web destinations, reveals that nearly half of survey respondents (48 per cent) are strapped for great gift ideas as we head into the final holiday purchasing push. The survey also shows that many of us are already dreading the less than ideal holiday gifts we receive from those who don't know what to get us, as close to half of survey respondents admit that re-gifting is part of their holiday strategy!

2011 - Year of the "Barganista" Holidays
"With December nearly here, many Canadians are feeling the pressure of finding a thoughtful gift with wow factor, and now more than ever we're looking to stretch our dollar to make it happen," says Cheryl MacLean, Head of Marketing, Torstar Digital.

"2011 is shaping up as the year of the 'barganista' holidays," she continues.  "Recent reports from Canadian financial institutions and industry watch-groups indicate that Canadians plan to spend less on holiday gifts this year compared with last year — but our new survey shows that although budgets may be smaller we're still hoping to bring joy to friends and family with thoughtful gifts."

Good and Bad Gifts by the Numbers:

  • 70 per cent of survey respondents who are planning on spending less on gifts this holiday season say it's because they have less money to spend.
  • 48 per cent of survey respondents are short of gift ideas for those on their holiday list this year.
  • 44 per cent of survey respondents have received what they consider to be a terrible holiday gift; the same percentage of us are re-gifters!
  • Nearly half of survey respondents (47 per cent) would rather receive money than a bad gift.
  • More than 40 per cent of survey respondents prefer receiving nothing or just well wishes to a bad gift.
  • Canadians want to take the reins when it comes to holiday gifts — 34 per cent of survey respondents put a gift certificate on the top of their list so they can do their own shopping.
