representing over 700 workers at Teck Coal Ltd.'s Elkview Operations
near here, are ready to shut down operations if a collective agreement
is not reached.
After voting 98.2 per cent in favour of strike action to back their
bargaining demands, union members will be ready to shut down operations
Sunday, January 30, at 8 p.m. unless a tentative deal is negotiated.
"Our members are preparing to bring about an orderly shutdown and strike

Local 9346 members have been without a collective agreement since
October 31, 2010. Outstanding issues include the employer's
contribution levels to the workers' retirement plan and retiree
The local, which represents an assortment of workers including heavy
equipment operators, trades and maintenance workers and labourers, has
been negotiating with the company since September of last year.
Teck Coal's Ltd's open pit operations are a key producer of high-grade
metallurgical coal, located in the Elk Valley. The company's customers
include steel producers in China and Japan.
