Union Members Preparing for Sunday Walkout at Teck Coal's Elkview Operations

SPARWOOD, BC, Jan. 27 /CNW/ - United Steelworkers Local 9346, representing over 700 workers at Teck Coal Ltd.'s Elkview Operations near here, are ready to shut down operations if a collective agreement is not reached.

After voting 98.2 per cent in favour of strike action to back their bargaining demands, union members will be ready to shut down operations Sunday, January 30, at 8 p.m. unless a tentative deal is negotiated.

"Our members are preparing to bring about an orderly shutdown and strike action will commence on Sunday," says USW Staff Representative Dan Will.

Local 9346 members have been without a collective agreement since October 31, 2010. Outstanding issues include the employer's contribution levels to the workers' retirement plan and retiree benefits.

The local, which represents an assortment of workers including heavy equipment operators, trades and maintenance workers and labourers, has been negotiating with the company since September of last year.

Teck Coal's Ltd's open pit operations are a key producer of high-grade metallurgical coal, located in the Elk Valley. The company's customers include steel producers in China and Japan.
