Ten community plots will generate up to $7,000 in produce annually

CHATHAM, ON, May 9 /CNW/ - Union Gas is launching a new community garden located at the company's head office in Chatham.

The garden, which will be managed in partnership with Food Link Chatham-Kent Community Gardens, will provide ten assignable plots, tools, seeds and education to members of the community interested in growing their own produce.

Union Gas will also install a water service near the garden - marking an additional $6,000 contribution. As well, Union Gas employees have organized two volunteer projects on Sat. May 14, where they will prepare the garden site and construct a storage shed.

"Union Gas and our employees have a passionate commitment to vibrant communities," said Julie Dill, President of Union Gas. "This initiative, which was inspired by our employee-led 'Green Team', will enhance the quality of life for residents in Chatham-Kent and is a fantastic example of our commitment to be the partner of choice in our communities."

The new garden will be the only community garden serving the northwest corner of Chatham.  Garden plot assignments will be administered by Food Link Chatham-Kent Community Gardens and will be made available to interested participants on a first-come, first-serve basis.

"Neighbours gardening together create healthy neighbourhoods and we are thrilled that Union Gas is making this garden a reality for the Chatham-Kent community," said Derwyn Armstrong, Coordinator of Food Link Chatham-Kent Community Gardens.  "Community Gardens offer many positive health benefits for participants and their families including access to wholesome fresh produce, cost-savings, increased physical activity and improved feelings of mental health and well-being."

The Union Gas Green Team was launched in 2010 for employees interested in environmental stewardship at work and in their community.  Other recent Green Team initiatives in Chatham include an organic waste disposal program, preferred parking spaces for carpool and hybrid-electric vehicles and employee education sessions.
