TVO Presents Exclusive World-Broadcast Event Honouring Prof. Stephen Hawking on Sunday, September 18, from Perimeter Institute

TORONTO, Sept. 7, 2011 /CNW/ - Explore the discoveries, the passion for science and the inspirational life story of the world's most-famous living physicist when TVO presents the exclusive world-broadcast premiere of "Stephen Hawking: The Power of Ideas" on Sunday, September 18 at 8 pm.

The program originates from the grand opening of The Stephen Hawking Centre at Perimeter Institute in Waterloo, Ontario, Canada.  TVO is the Presenting Media Partner of the event.

"Stephen Hawking: The Power of Ideas" 60-minute broadcast will share:

  • The importance of theoretical physics and Prof. Hawking's specific accomplishments
  • His role as a top science communicator in popularizing research and discovery
  • Lessons from his incredible life journey and how he inspires others throughout science and beyond

Prof. Hawking's many accomplishments will be detailed throughout the program - which includes grand opening celebrations, a mini-documentary and a compelling panel discussion featuring:

  • Neil Turok, leading cosmologist and Director of Perimeter Institute
  • Brian Greene, string theorist, author and noted science communicator
  • Julie Payette, Canadian astronaut
  • Rebecca Saxe, cognitive neuroscientist

Hosted by Ivan Semeniuk, science journalist and broadcaster, the program will also include comments from Prof. Hawking and tributes from famous Canadians - including Rick Hansen, David Foster and other special guests - to punctuate the hour.

"Stephen Hawking is an inspirational figure for his scientific research, his mentorship of young physicists and his unequalled communication of a love for scientific discovery to the world over," says Neil Turok, Director of Perimeter Institute.  "It is a pleasure to partner with TVO in sharing Stephen's many accomplishments and highlighting the importance of research, discovery and innovation."

"We're honoured to be the Presenting Media Partner for the Grand Opening of the Stephen Hawking Centre and to be working with the Perimeter Institute again to nurture scientific literacy in Ontario," says TVO CEO Lisa de Wilde. "This event is an example of how like-minded organizations working together can make a greater impact in the province."

In tandem with the tribute to Prof. Hawking and a public open house, will also live stream four special public lectures from Perimeter Institute on Sunday, September 18, starting at 10:00am.  The speakers and details include:

  • 10 am - 11 am: George Dyson, Science historian and author, on the origins of the digital universe
  • 12 pm - 1 pm: Hod Lipson, Director of the Computational Synthesis Lab at Cornell University, on the rise of programmable matter and the future of "3D printers"
  • 2 pm - 3 pm: Natalia Toro, Faculty at Perimeter Institute, on the world's most ambitious scientific experiment, the Large Hadron Collider (LHC)
  • 4 pm - 5 pm: Julie Payette, Astronaut from the Canadian Space Agency, with perspectives from the International Space Station on scientific research and international diplomacy

TVO's long-term relationship with the Perimeter Institute is designed to make science more broadly accessible to people of all ages, as scientific literacy is essential to the long-term success and prosperity of Ontario.

About Prof. Hawking
Prof. Stephen Hawking has made several extraordinary contributions to fundamental theoretical physics, especially in establishing the classical and quantum properties of black holes and in building quantum gravitational theories of the origin of the universe and structures within it. His most celebrated work was the theoretical prediction that black holes should emit radiation, known as Hawking radiation. He is a Perimeter Institute Distinguished Research Chair and, until recently, was Lucasian Professor of Mathematics at Cambridge University.  Prof. Hawking has authored many popular books, from A Brief History of Time (1988) to George's Secret Key to the Universe (2007). Additional information regarding Prof. Hawking can be found here on PI's website.
