Growing healthy organizations "a business imperative" in today's economy

NANAIMO, B.C., May 4 /CNW/ - Toronto will play host city to the 15th annual Health Work & Wellness™ Conference 2011, taking place at the Westin Harbour Castle Hotel, October 4 to 6. The conference is Canada's leading forum on building healthy organizations, and brings together hundreds of leaders in the organizational health community in Canada, as well as senior management in both the private and public sectors intent on supporting healthy change in their workplaces.

The cost to the Canadian economy from workplace stress, depression and mental illness is a staggering 35 million lost workdays and an estimated $35 billion in lost productivity annually, according to the Global Business and Economic Roundtable on Mental Health.

Health Work & Wellness™ Conference President and founder, Deborah Connors said that the theme of this year's conference is a call to action for the Canadian private and public sectors to make organizational health a business imperative. "During this economic recovery, a healthy organization is critical for recruitment, retention and success," said Connors. "As companies go through reorganization and downsizing, work intensifies and loyalty is impacted; therefore a healthy workplace that emphasizes wellness is essential. We define a healthy organization as one where the workplace culture, leadership practices and the psycho-social environment merge so people can be at their best."

Connors said that delegates to the conference will discover the new perspective required to navigate these chaotic economic times from the global line up of guests, seminars and keynote speakers at the conference. "I invite you to discover how you can shift from 'strategic planning' to 'strategic thinking' and inspire your staff to give their personal best," said Connors. "By joining us at Conference 2011: A Business Imperative, delegates will discover how to create a workplace culture that supports the needs of employees for mental, physical, emotional, spiritual and social well-being."

Delegate registration for Conference 2011 is now available at under the Conference 2011 menu bar.

Major corporate partners for this year's Conference include Great-West Life, the Great-West Life Centre for Mental Health in the Workplace, Morneau Shepell, Homewood Human Solutions, SunLife, Desjardins Financial Security and Ceridian. More than 500 delegates from across Canada, the U.S. and overseas are expected to attend this year's event.
