Toronto CFA Society Announces Four Finalists in Second Annual Global Investment Research Challenge

TORONTO, Feb. 7 /CNW/ - Toronto CFA Society is pleased to announce the four finalists in this year's Global Investment Research Challenge, in which eleven Ontario university teams competed to present a research report on the subject company, Brookfield Renewable Power Fund.  Competing in the 2011 final will be four student teams from the following universities:  Ivey School of Business (University of Western Ontario), Queen's School of Business, Sprott School of Business (Carleton University) and University of Waterloo.

The Global IRC is an educational initiative in which leading industry professionals guide business and finance students from respected business schools across the province in researching and reporting on a publicly traded company.  The program spans one academic year and consists of analyzing a public company (selected by Toronto CFA Society), mentoring by a professional research analyst, writing a research report and presenting the team's results and recommendations to a high profile panel of Toronto's industry professionals.  Marks are awarded to each team on the basis of their investment case, their delivery and their ability to answer and respond to detailed analysis from the judges.

Peter Jarvis, Executive Director of Toronto CFA Society, said, "This year's competition promises to be a challenging event for the students taking part.  Our society is very excited to be bringing the event to Toronto, and for giving students the chance to meet some of the finest investment professionals and to potentially meet their contemporaries from many other countries.  It's further evidence of the continued educational work we are doing to help support the investment professionals of tomorrow."

"Brookfield is proud to have played a part in this year's challenge," said Zev Korman, Director of Investor Relations and Communications at Brookfield Renewable Power Fund. "We are strong believers in the value of fundamental research and its importance in driving good investment decisions. In today's capital markets, the need for high quality analysis is greater than ever, and so is its value. We congratulate all of the participants on their hard work and wish the advancing teams good luck in the finals."

The winning team will be determined based upon the best combined score for the written report and presentation before a panel of judges on March 3, 2011.  This team will qualify for the CFA Institute Americas Regional Final of The Global Investment Research Challenge in Omaha, Nebraska to compete against teams from schools across the Americas in April 2011.
