  • New volume and transaction records set

TORONTO, Jan. 6 /CNW/ - TMX Group Inc. today announced December and full-year 2010 trading statistics for its diversified group of exchanges - Toronto Stock Exchange, TSX Venture Exchange, Montreal Exchange and Natural Gas Exchange (NGX).

Tom Kloet, CEO, TMX Group, noted: "In 2010 we continued to see improved participation on TMX Group Exchanges. As a result, multiple records were set during the year, including a combined volume record set on Toronto Stock Exchange and TSX Venture Exchange, as well as a record in combined transactions on our equities markets. Annual volume and year-end open interest records were also set on Montreal Exchange, with higher participation in both interest rate and equity derivatives over the previous year.  NGX also set new volume records in its growing suite of energy and power products."

Highlights

The combined volume on Toronto Stock Exchange and TSX Venture Exchange for 2010 was 172,442,994,161, which represents an increase of 4% over the previous record of 165,351,274,278, which was achieved in 2009. In addition, the combined transactions on the Exchanges for 2010 were 198,344,554, exceeding the earlier record of 196,657,234 in 2009. TSX Venture Exchange also achieved an independent record in trading volume of 67,887,794,824, compared to the previous record of 52,627,548,550 in 2007, an increase of 29%.

Toronto Stock Exchange December 2010 figures showed increases in volume, value and transactions over December 2009, though December 2010 levels across all measures were down slightly compared to November 2010. Overall in 2010, volume on Toronto Stock Exchange was down 11% compared to 2009. TSX Venture Exchange saw a slight increase in volume in December 2010 compared to the previous month, and full-year levels far exceeded 2009 levels across all measures.

In 2010, Montreal Exchange experienced an annual record in volume totaling 44,296,907 contracts, which exceeds the previous record of 42,742,210 contracts set in 2007 and reflects and increase of 28% from 2009. In 2010 total open interest was up 30%. Volume on Montreal Exchange was down slightly in December 2010 compared to the previous month, however open interest increased by 6%.

NGX achieved a record in trading volume in 2010, with levels surpassing the previous record set in 2009 by 13%. Volume was down slightly in December 2010 compared to November 2010, however was up 14% as compared to December 2009.
