Three Ontario party leaders will go head-to-head for six rounds

TORONTO, Sept. 13, 2011 /CNW/ - The three major provincial party leaders will engage in head-to-head encounters during the Ontario election leaders' debate, scheduled for 6:30-8pmET, Tuesday September 27, the broadcasting consortium announced today. And for the first time, the provincial debate will be presented in high-definition television.

The participants will be Dalton McGuinty of the Liberal Party of Ontario, Andrea Horwath of the Ontario New Democrats and Tim Hudak of the Progressive Conservative Party of Ontario.

Steve Paikin, host of TVO's current affairs program The Agenda With Steve Paikin, will moderate.  Paikin has moderated the last three federal television leaders' debates in addition to the last Ontario provincial debate in 2007.

The five-member broadcasting consortium also announced other details of the debate format, which have been agreed to by the parties. Each broadcaster has been soliciting questions from the public since the campaign began September 7 and will continue to do so until September 20. Members of the public can submit questions for consideration to a common email address:

Viewer questions will begin each of six rounds of debate. In each round, two of the leaders will debate for six minutes; the third leader will join the other two for a three-person debate for the subsequent eight minutes.

The consortium also drew lots today to determine the order of speakers and other details, including:

  • Lectern position (left to right looking at television screen): McGuinty/Horwath/Hudak;

  • Sequence of debates:
    • Round 1: Hudak/McGuinty;
    • Round 2: Horwath/Hudak;
    • Round 3: McGuinty/Horwath;
    • Round 4: McGuinty/Hudak;
    • Round 5: Hudak/Horwath
    • Round 6: Horwath/McGuinty
  • Closing statements: McGuinty/Hudak/Horwath
