Thousands of Marihuana Plants Seized By Local Law Enforcement

CORNWALL, ON, Sept. 22, 2011 /CNW/ - Between September 12th and 16th, 2011, the Cornwall Regional Task Force (CRTF) in partnership with the Cornwall Combined Forces Special Enforcement Unit (CFSEU), RCMP's Integrated Criminal Intelligence Section (ICIS), the Ontario Provincial Police Emergency Response Team (ERT), Ontario Provincial Police Drug Enforcement Unit (DEU) officers and the RCMP's "C" Division Air Services worked together on a marihuana eradication project named OSABOT.

Marihuana eradication is undertaken annually in law enforcement's ongoing efforts of reducing the availability of this drug within our communities.  On Wednesday, September 21st, 2011, the RCMP launched the national Marihuana Grow Initiative to combat the prevalence of marihuana production being run and exploited by organized crime groups in Canada. This joint forces operation is an example of the collaboration envisioned within the Initiative and is the next step in building a coordinated, collective response to this issue across Canada.

As a result of this cooperation, a total of 5,736 marihuana plants and 6,357 grams of dried marihuana was seized, two (2) search warrants were executed and two (2) individuals, both, from the Greater Toronto Area, face charges of cultivation and possession for the purposes of trafficking in this illicit drug.

During this operation, members made marihuana seizures in varying amounts in the following areas: Alfred/Plantagenet, Alexandria, Bainsville, Avonmore, Crysler, Curran, Hawkesbury, Lunenburg, Maxville, Moose Creek, Newington, North Glengarry, Osnabruck, South Stormont, St. Isidore, Wendover, and Williamsburg.

The CRTF continues to address the complaints of suspicious activity observed by local residents.  If anyone notices suspicious activity, they are urged to please contact the CRTF at 613-937-2800 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.

The CRTF is a joint forces partnership that includes the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, Canada Border Services Agency, Ontario Provincial Police, Ontario Ministry of Revenue and Cornwall Community Police Service.
