MONTREAL, Sept. 6, 2011 /CNW Telbec/ - The Orchestre symphonique de
Montréal (OSM) is pleased to announce that it has come to an agreement
with the Québec Musicans' Guild for the renewal of the collective
agreement binding the two parties until 2014.
The agreement was reached following intensive negotiations that lasted
close to a week with the assistance of a mediator. The mediator's
proposal on outstanding clauses was accepted by the OSM's executive

"On the eve of the inaugural concert for the OSM's new hall, management
of the Orchestra is very happy about this agreement, which was
negotiated in the best interests of both parties. Management and the
union both made compromises and demonstrated the open-mindedness needed
to come to an agreement," stated Lucien Bouchard, chairman of the OSM.
"With the inauguration of its new hall, the OSM is writing a new chapter
in its history in which the musicians, directed by maestro Kent Nagano,
will obviously play a major role. Thanks to today's agreement, the
musicians will be able to play to their full talent for the benefit of
the many music enthusiasts who follow the OSM," continued Mr. Bouchard.
Madeleine Careau, chief executive officer of the OSM, pointed out that
the agreement respects the Orchestra's ability to pay while taking into
account the union's objective and offering to the musicians a
remuneration in line with their stature. "We faced the challenge of
coming to an agreement that preserves the Orchestra's financial
equilibrium while recognizing the excellence of its musicians. Thanks
to both parties' goodwill, we were able to achieve this objective," she
The agreement provides for wage increases of 10.5% over four years, as
well as improvements to the musicians' pension plan.
Under the new agreement, musicians will benefit financially from the
broadcast of concerts on new digital platforms. "This type of broadcast
will increase the OSM's exposure, and we agreed that the musicians'
contribution would be recognized through a profit-sharing formula
related to this type of activity," stated Ms. Careau.
The OSM's inaugural concert in its new hall will take place tomorrow
evening under the baton of Kent Nagano. Moreover, the OSM invites the
public to free visits of its new home during open house events that
will take place Thursday, Friday and Saturday afternoon.
