The Killer Whale is the Focus of the Newest HWW PSA

The PSA profiles one of Canada's Species at Risk

OTTAWA, June 8, 2011 /CNW/ - It's Oceans Day!  And on that occasion the Canadian Wildlife Federation (CWF) is releasing the latest video of the popular Hinterland Who's Who (HWW) series: the killer whale, or orca.

This release also coincides with the beginning of Rivers to Oceans Week, from June 8th to 14th, during which Canadians are invited to celebrate and care for our waterways. Learning about the killer whale is a great start.

"The Hinterland Who's Who program cultivates an admiration of wildlife and a willingness to conserve it. The new killer whale public service announcement is no exception," says Wade Luzny, CEO and Executive Vice-President of the Canadian Wildlife Federation. "Marine habitats are home to close to a hundred of Canada's species at risk. Helping people understand the killer whale and the threats it faces is a step towards a greater awareness of our marine wildlife and its importance."

The killer whale lives in all three of Canada's oceans in a variety of habitats. Shot on British Columbia's beautiful coastline, the PSA presents facts about this unique whale's ecology. It also explains how threats like the accumulation of toxic chemicals in its food have caused four out of five populations of this species to become at risk in Canada.

A downloadable killer whale fact sheet is also available. It complements the PSA by providing detailed descriptions of the species, its characteristics, range and diet. The fact sheet describes the different threats affecting the killer whale and what's being done to conserve it. People can also get ideas on what they can do at home to help this species at risk and its marine habitats.

Hinterlands Who's Who is a joint program of the Canadian Wildlife Federation and Environment Canada. Together, they bring a wealth of knowledge and experience to the series. Hinterland Who's Who has been bringing Canadians closer to our wilderness heritage for more than 40 years.

First created in the early 1960s, Hinterland Who's Who (HWW) made bold use of a relatively new medium — black and white television — to reach the Canadian general public. The new Hinterland Who's Who, launched in 2003, serves to rebuild the connection thousands of viewers made with wildlife through the original series and ensure that wildlife remains part of what it means to be Canadian.
