CALGARY, May 26, 2011 /CNW/ - The Oil Sands Tailings Consortium (OSTC)
today announced the appointment of Alan Fair as Executive Director. In
a bold industry move, the OSTC was formed in December 2010 by oil sands
operators to share tailings research and technology in a unified effort
to rapidly advance tailings management.
Mr. Fair, Manager of Research and Development for Syncrude, will retire
at the end of June after 32 years of service to assume this role as
"The pledge to collaborate was a significant milestone in improving
management of tailings and reflects the member companies' commitment to
socially and environmentally responsible operations," said Shell's John
Broadhurst, Chairman for the OSTC. "As the Consortium continues to
move forward, we will be well served by Alan's experience and
dedication to improving tailings management."
With more than three decades of experience in the oil sands, Mr. Fair is
familiar with the complexities of tailings management. He has
published several technical papers, including many focused on
tailings. Throughout his career, Mr. Fair has been involved in many
aspects of reclamation including the development of new tailings
technologies. Mr. Fair also has served as the Chair for the Canadian
Oil Sands Network for Research and Development (CONRAD).
"It has been a long held personal desire of mine to see industry come
together on tailings research in a truly collaborative fashion to work
towards improved solutions. Having been involved in tailings
management throughout my life, I look forward to dedicating the next
chapter of my career directly to this, " said Mr. Fair. "I am deeply
honoured to oversee the direction of the group as we move forwards to
advance tailings reclamation."
The membership of the OSTC is comprised of Canadian Natural Resources
Limited, Imperial Oil, Shell Canada, Suncor Energy, Syncrude Canada
Ltd., Teck Resources and Total E&P Canada. Following a landmark
agreement announced in December 2010, member companies pledged to share
existing tailings technology and research and to work together to
accelerate the pace of reclamation.
