Supermarket's bargaining in Shawville is in a standstill

SHAWVILLE, QC, Jan. 31 /CNW Telbec/ - Unionized workers at Valu-Mart in Shawville, in the Pontiac region, protest the bad faith of Loblaw. The management still maintains the negociation process in a standstill. Since the last meeting with the union the 16th of december the employer has kept silent and did not respond to the union's counterproposals.

The employer pretends that the union's demands are unrealistic and will put in danger its business in Shawville. However, the counterproposals are the same as those agreed in other supermarkets. The union has even offered to put them in place only at the end of the agreement. The union has also asked the management to proove its financial situation, by showing its books and submit them to an analysis by an independant firm.

"Our demands are legitimate and we are more than ever determined to obtain good working conditions, says Karen Cartman, president of the union. We want to thank all the people in the community who support us in our struggle for respect,'' she added.

For Benoit Boucher, the union's negociator : '' The members can be proud that many in the population are supporting them, contrary to some local representatives who prefer acting for the company without knowing the facts.''

On unlimited general strike since december 2nd and having the support of their colleagues of other supermarkets in the area, the 32 employees are determined to reach their goal of a good contract.

The union, Le Syndicat des travailleuses et des travailleurs du Valu-Mart is affiliated with the Confédération des syndicats nationaux (CSN), the Fédération du Commerce - CSN and the Conseil central des syndicats nationaux de l'Outaouais.
