Stuss to Head the Ontario Brain Institute

TORONTO, Jan. 24 /CNW/ - Key to the launch of the Ontario Brain Institute (OBI), the Board of Directors is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Donald Stuss as President and Scientific Director (Interim).

Dr. Stuss, University Professor in Psychology, Neurology and Rehabilitation Science at the University of Toronto, comes to the OBI from Baycrest, one of the world's premier academic health sciences centers focused on aging and the study of human brain function. He is a distinguished scientist and leader in neuroscience in Ontario, Canada and internationally. His research work includes the study of the frontal lobe of the brain, which underlies memory, cognition and consciousness. He investigates the interaction of emotion and cognition, and how brain function is affected by the aging process.

Members of the search committee for the interim President and Scientific Director included:

  • Dr. Paul Garfinkel, former President and CEO of the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health
  • Mr. Joseph Rotman, Chairman, Roy-L Capital
  • Dr. Michael Strong, Dean of the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry, The University of Western Ontario

  • Mr. Todd Vienneau, Director, Medical Affairs, GlaxoSmithKline. Inc.
  • Dr. Ronald Worton, former CEO and Scientific Director of the Ottawa Hospital Research Institute (OHRI)

The search committee was unanimous in its recommendation. "Dr. Stuss's career as a clinician-scientist in the neurosciences will be invaluable in establishing liaisons with the breadth of the Ontario neuroscience communities and engaging the neuroscience leadership in Ontario universities and hospitals" said Dr. Tator.

Dr. Worton added, "Don's background in the translation of research to clinical care will be ideal for guiding the initial development of the Ontario Brain Institute and its programs".

The Board is confident that, with this appointment, the OBI has the leadership to realize the vision of Ontario as a world-leading centre for brain research, translation and innovation.
