Students Quiz Political Parties on Education Priorities

OTTAWA, April 1 /CNW/ - Students are asking the federal political parties to outline their strategy to ensure that Canadians from every province have access to a high-quality and affordable system of post-secondary education.

"Canadians are concerned about the cost and quality of Canada's post-secondary education system," said David Molenhuis, National Chairperson of the Canadian Federation of Students. "Education is a ballot box issue for many Canadians and students are challenging the parties to set out their vision for education."

Students have asked each of the federal parities six questions about how their party will improve the post-secondary education system if elected on May 2. The results of this questionnaire will form the basis of an election report card that will be circulated to students and released online.

To date, the Liberal Party is the only federal party that has made a post-secondary education related campaign promise. The party has committed an additional $1 billion to non-repayable student financial aid for students with a RESP.

"Canada is the only OECD country without any national oversight of post-secondary education," added Molenhuis. "We are asking party leaders to demonstrate why students and their families should vote for them."

The Canadian Federation of Students is Canada's largest student organisation, uniting more that one-half million students in all ten provinces. The Canadian Federation of Students and its predecessor organisations have represented students in Canada since 1927.
